Bottoms Up Case Study
Bottoms Up Coffee Co-op was born out of a deep need to address social injustices in our community disproportionately affecting low-income families of color. Using our marketing and entrepreneurial skills we created a business (marketing agency) within a business (coffee shop and co-working space) so that we could establish our social justice brand and make a difference in the Franklinton neighborhood through community engagement. Over the past 7 years, over 50,000 diapers and many cribs were donated to families in need. There were numerous partnerships formed with organizations like the City of Columbus’ nonprofit CelebrateOne and the Mount Carmel College of nursing. Through Community Health Workers, housed at the co-working space we were able to help local families address social determinants of health impacting high infant mortality rates in the area. While the infant mortality rate in Franklinton has been on the decline, there is still a lot of work to be done to make sure all families are able to raise happy, healthy babies in an equitable way.
